Mangonui Fish Shop serves up a variety of fruits de mer. For over 70 years they’ve been bringing in daily fresh catches for their customers. Their motto “fresh local fish caught by local fisherman”. The restaurant and shop are located only 100 meters from the wharf and sit on stilts directly above the ocean water. And even more to solidify their expertise, this small fishing village of Mangonui is known for its rich fish history.

Another reason to support this local small business is because of their efforts to support the environment and be a sustainability-friendly business. Mangonui Fish Shop makes sure to use all parts of each fish they catch, they strive to have little food waste by providing unused food items to local farmers, and of course they are part of the plastic free initiative. They limit their uses of plastic to biodegradable plastic bags and take away coffee lids.

What To Eat

Of course the house speciality is fish and chips. This is an absolute must on your visit. However, because they use daily fresh caught fish the types of fish being offered my change on a day to day basis. This is also based on the season and weather. Mangonui Fish Shop recommends that you call ahead to find out what fish is available that day. Here is the menu of fresh fish options they could possibly have!

I also recommend trying any items from the chilled seafood menu. The mussels, the oysters, shrimp, you name it. They’ll be tempting you anyways as you order your fish and chips. Looking all delish on display at the counter, so you may as well get your table a lil’ appetizer to share.
