Huntington Beach, California also known as Surf City USA is a great place to kick back relax and enjoy a seaside vacation. The laid-back attitude and pace of Huntington Beach makes it the perfect spot to stroll Main Street, walk out on the iconic HB pier, and wander the beach trail with a cup of coffee in your hand. It’s an activity Lemon and I always enjoy! Let’s chat about some of the top spots to grab your coffee in Surf City USA.

Coffee Whipped

  • Location: 7176 Edinger Avenue HB, CA
  • Price: $-$$
  • Why You Should Visit: More unique options
Coffee Whipped

Hidden in a Hobby Lobby shopping center is a Huntington Beach coffee gem of a treat known as Coffee Whipped. I honestly have dreams about their coffee, whenever I’m in the area I just have to stop and grab a treat. Serving up croffles (croissant waffles) and some fun and more unique specialty drinks.

By far, the top prize goes to the Dalgona Whipped Coffee. It is my favorite drink on the menu, and I have been known to travel here just to get my whipped coffee fix. I also recommend trying their strawberry matcha if you enjoy matcha.

Insider Tip: Unlike all my other top locations, this location is not in the downtown area of Huntington Beach. Therefore, if you’re staying in downtown HB and don’t have a car or simply don’t want to drive, this option is not for you. It’s located roughly 15 minutes driving from the downtown area. However, if you do have plans to attend the GWC Swap Meet, grab your Coffee Whipped there!

1 Oz Coffee

  • Location: 155 5th St HB, CA
  • Pricing: $-$$
  • Why You Should Visit: No artificial sweeteners or syrups. Coffee Education/Classes

Newer to the Huntington Beach coffee scene, 1 Oz Coffee opened its HB location in 2023. Located next to Shorebreak Hotel, this coffee boutique highlights experimental brewing techniques and high-quality drinks. Along with all the coffee classics, 1 Oz Coffee offers seasonal drinks, an ube latte, a matcha latte, cold brew coffee, and one of my favorites, the cinnamon honey latte. Elevated brunch options are also available for a very reasonable price.

However, what steals the show at 1 Oz Coffee is their flight options. Currently, on the menu, they have two different flight options to select from single origin and mini latte. The latte option (Pictured below) featuring ube, matcha, regular, and cinnamon honey lattes.  The single source option features a cold brew, batch brew, single espresso, and single macchiato. Overall, my favorite option is the latte flight.

Once I grab my flight, I always enjoy sitting in their outside seating area. (Image below.) If I’m grabbing coffee with a group, this is my go-to spot since we can all sit outside and enjoy the downtown Huntington Beach views.

Insider Tip: Share the coffee flight with a friend. It’s a lot of coffee. I never get through all four tastings on my own!

Philz Coffee

  • Location: 21010 Pacific Coast Highway HB, CA
  • Pricing: $$-$$$
  • Why You Should Visit: A California Classic
Philz Coffee

Now generally I’d rather support small independent coffee boutiques over larger establishments, but I bend my coffee rules for Philz. With roughly 70 locations, it’s a fan favorite for a reason and it’s not just the coffee. Their friendly caring warm Cali vibe is another thing that keep customers coming back. The company mission statement literally is to Better Days for everyone, everyday.

Philz is big on the idea that you should be able to try your coffee and make any changes if you don’t love it. They are more than happy to give you suggestions. You will get to know the name of the individual who is making your coffee and most likely they will tell you that if you aren’t satisfied with the taste, they will work to make it the perfect cup of coffee for your taste buds. Some of my favorites are the Mint Mojito, Iced Coffee Rose, Philtered Soul, Honey Haze, and the Luca’s Unplugged Decaf when I want that coffee taste late in the day.

Insider Tip: Philz is located in Pacific City which is a beachfront shopping and dining center. It’s a great place to spend the day with family and friends. If you do want to park in the Pacific City structure, it will cost you. On non busy days you might be able to find free parking on various side street. Oh and order on-line and pick up in the store, this place gets busy!

Sur Coffee

  • Location: 214 5th St #102 HB, CA
  • Pricing: $$-$$$
  • Why You Should Go: All about partnerships and community

Sur Coffee’s first location opened in San Clemente. Then they headed to Huntington Beach to set up their second coastal location. They pride themselves on their coffee sourcing and building partnerships with the farms and families they work with. They also give back, donating to causes they believe in. It’s more than a coffee cafe; they are part of the community.

I’m a sucker for their lavender latte. I’ve tried lavender lattes near and far and I always come back to Sur Coffee for my lavender latte craving. Another fan favorite is their cortado. I must admit I run here just for a cup of coffee and run out! Personally, I feel the vibe inside it not incredibly inviting, or comfortable for sitting and relaxing. The layout of the store even resembles more of a coffee bar than a coffee shop. The coffee is fantastic but it’s more of a “grab a quick cup of coffee and go” atmosphere oppose to a “hang out with friends while enjoying coffee relaxing” vibe.

Insider Tip: I enjoy substituting oat milk instead of regular milk in the lavender latte.

602 Coffee

  • Location: 602 Pacific Coast Highway HB, CA
  • Pricing: $-$$
  • Why You Should Visit: Location location location and unique options

602 Coffee has a few locations in the Orange County area however the downtown HB location is a fan favorite because of its proximity to the beach. Located on PCH just across from the beach this is the prime spot to pick up coffee before you walk the beach trail or head out onto the sand. Another cool aspect is that they offer acai bowls as well as other treats like bagels, and bagel sandwiches.

I do want to mention there isn’t indoor seating, but there is a good deal of outdoor seating. 602 Coffee really provides a very casual iconic beachside Cali experience. You just can’t get this beachy vibe elsewhere. Because of the easy beach access a lot of people “grab and go” for their trip out on the sand.

Insider Tip: The bananas foster coldbrew, it’s a must!

Bonus Spot| Java Point

  • Location: 126 Main St HB, CA in Huntington Surf and Sport
  • Pricing: $
  • Why You Should Visit: It’s where the locals go!

Wanna really live like a HB local and get the best cup of drip coffee downtown? Then you have to head to Java Point in Huntington Surf and Sport, this is where the Huntington Beach coffee pros go! And yes, there is a cafe in a surf retail store and it’s iconic. It’s a great place to talk surf and make some new friends. One of the best kept not so secret secrets of Main Street. Early in the am a lot of locals can be seen grabbing a cup of freshly brewed coffee and lingering around the store or outdoor seating area doing what beach town locals do best, relaxing!

I highly recommend just getting a regular cup of good ol’ drip coffee. I’ve tried ALL the coffee on Main Street, literally! And personally, I think Java Point has the best coffee around. Oh and a refill will only set you back like a buck!

Insider Tip: There is a very tiny upstairs area with very limited seating, but it is oh so cute, so check it out on your visit!
